Sculpture/book about Paula Rego

I made this Sculpture/Book about an artist who has inspired me recently: Paula Rego. I learned a lot through her artworks and listened to all her interviews that I could find. Thus, I based this Sculpture/Book on her for one of my first year final projects at Parsons School of Design.

Through this piece, I wanted to show not only what I learned about Paula Rego, but also the interaction that I felt I had with her through all my research and all her interviews I listened to. Thus, I decided to make the book a sort of 3D space wherein I’m having an interaction and connecting to Paula Rego. Also, I wanted to depict that my process of discovering more about Paula Rego is ongoing and that this book does not contain everything that I have learned about her. As though I am still trying to study her, her life and her works in this space, and that there is more to uncover.

Moreover, I learned that Paula Rego worked with a lot of layers of pastels. She even once said “If I tell you how many layers I work through, no one will buy them anymore because they’ll think the layers are going to fall off!”
Thus, I wanted to use the layers as a metaphor to her life. When I was listening to her interviews, I realised that there is so much to learn about her and I wanted to convey that for me to get to know her as both a painter and a person, I would have to look through the numerous layers of her whole life.
